MASS MoCA is the largest non-collecting contemporary art museum in the United States and is known for its ambitious program of commissioning works from artists. Denise Markonish has spent the last twelve years working on large-scale projects and group shows at MASS MoCA. In this talk Markonish will discuss her work at MASS MoCA, in particular her idea of curating as producing. The presentation will include group shows such as Oh, Canada, the largest exhibition of contemporary Canadian art for which she embarked on 400 studio visits across the country, to exhibitions about wonder (Explode Everyday) and the human condition (Suffering from Realness). Markonish will also talk about the multi-year process of working with artists on large commissions such as Nick Cave Until and Nari Ward Sub Mirage Lingum and Trenton Doyle Hancock: Mind of the Mound Critical Mass. Throughout, the talk will highlight that there is more to curating than what meets the eye.​

Denise Markonish is the senior curator and managing director of visual arts at MASS MoCA. Her exhibitions include Trenton Doyle Hancock, Mind of the Mound: Critical Mass; Nick Cave: Until; Explode Every Day: An Inquiry into the Phenomena of Wonder; Teresita Fernández: As Above So Below; Oh, Canada; Nari Ward: Sub Mirage Lignum; These Days: Elegies for Modern Times; and Badlands: New Horizons in Landscape. She edited the books Teresita Fernández: Wayfinding (DelMonico/Prestel) and Wonder: 50 Years of RISD Glass, and co-edited Sol LeWitt: 100 Views (Yale University Press). Markonish has taught at Williams College and the Rhode Island School of Design.
