Hovey Brock presents, “Mildred’s Lane, an Art Institute of Social Engagement,” examining where Mildred’s Lane fits in the “social turn,” as Claire Bishop put it, of contemporary art. Variously described as a living museum, an on-going center for research, and a residency, its success depends both on the cultural capital of its participants and co-founder J. Morgan Puett’s programming. It has aspects of relational esthetics in its open-ended curatorial focus, which cycles in artists from all over the world. However, its activities dedicated to building communities of interest have strong correlations with social practice. Sui generis, Mildred’s Lane combines exhibitions and research with, as Puett puts it, “the pursuit of the banal,” e.g. washing dishes or building shelters as artistic practice, adding a new chapter to the on-going tale of fusing art and life.

Hovey Brock

Hovey Brock is an artist, educator, and writer who divides his time between Brooklyn, NY and Claryville, NY. An NEA fellowship recipient, he has exhibited his paintings internationally, and is in both public and private collections. He has written for ARTnews, and is a frequent contributor to The Brooklyn Rail’s “Art Seen” section. His current project, Crazy River, which has been in the works since 2017, consists of text, videos, and paintingsabout his life-long relationship to the West Branch of the Neversink, which runs between Ulster and Sullivan counties in New York state. “Neversink” is a corruption of the river’s original Lenapé name, which means something like “crazy river.” The paintings are conceptual landscapes. The text and videos addresses his identification with the West Branch. Crazy River asks the question: “How can we reimagine our relationship with the land, water, and air that integrates us into the whole?”
