MARKING: Works on Paper by Alastair James Gordon

May 9 - June 22, 2025

Alastair Gordon will be exhibiting a series of works on paper at the Mildred’s Lane Inc. Project Space between May 9 and June 22, 2025. Alastair is both an artist and writer. His art and writing are closely linked. One feeds off the other. The drawings are simple markings with ink and (sometimes) gouache, a kind of long-hand calligraphy, without words. The process is slow, repetitive and contemplative. What begins as a written text, might turn into an abstract “emergence”. The larger pieces take several months to complete.

Alastair studied studio art with Richard Serra, Tony Smith, Al Held, Joel Shapiro, Robert Ryman, Lynda Benglis, Barry Le Va and Mel Bochner. He studied art history and critical theory with George Kubler, Andrew Forge, J.B. Jackson, Vincent Scully and Robert Herbert. After receiving an MFA from Yale in 1978, he went on to exhibit his work in both North America and Europe. For more than twenty years, he wrote on art, architecture, and the environment for the New York Times and later served as Contributing Editor on Art & Design for the Wall Street Journal Magazine. In addition to his studio practice and critical journalism, Gordon has published more than 28 books including such acclaimed titles as Weekend Utopia, Naked Airport, Spaced Out, Theater of Shopping, Romantic Modernist, Island Follies, and Wandering Forms. In 2016, he launched the “Poetics-of-Place” critical writing program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and has taught and lectured at many other institutions. Alastair is Co-Founder and Editorial Director of Gordon de Vries Studio, an imprint that specializes in books about art and the human environment.
